Why so many Pinellas ceilings still have it

Sprayed acoustic texture went on almost everything built here between the late sixties and the early nineties, which is most of Largo, Seminole, big parts of Clearwater and a lot of Palm Harbor. It was fast, it hid a rough drywall finish, and it was never meant to be looked at closely.

Thirty and forty years later it has picked up smoke, cooking grease and water stains, and it has been painted over at least once in most houses. It also collects dust in a way a flat ceiling does not, and it makes a room feel lower and darker than it is.

Taking it off changes a room more than any wall color will, and it is the single most common thing people ask us about after they buy a house here. It is also the job they keep postponing, because the mess is the part everybody imagines and nobody wants.

Containment comes before the scraper

The mess is a solved problem and the solution is boring. Plastic goes up wall to wall, the floor gets sealed, doorways get closed off, and the room is isolated from the rest of the house before anybody picks up a scraper. Vents in the room get covered so the system does not carry dust into every other room in the house.

Then the texture comes down wet. Wetting it first keeps the dust out of the air and it makes the scraping cleaner, which is the whole difference between a room you can walk back into and a house you are cleaning for a fortnight. Dry scraping is faster for the crew and worse for you.

The debris goes into the plastic and the plastic goes out. What is left is a bare ceiling that needs work, and that is the part people do not picture when they imagine this job.

What is underneath, and making it flat

Under the texture there is usually a drywall finish nobody ever expected to be seen. Tape seams that were never fully coated, screw dimples, and the odd patch from an old fixture. That is normal. The texture was covering it on purpose.

So the ceiling gets skimmed, sanded and primed until it is genuinely flat, and then it is either finished smooth or given a knockdown texture. Smooth is harder to get right and it is unforgiving, because a flat ceiling under raking light shows every ridge you leave. Knockdown is more common here and it hides more.

One customer had her popcorn removed before she moved in, by somebody else, and could still see the blemishes and the seams afterwards. She had us back to repair and repaint the ceilings flat white, and wrote that she could not be happier with the result. A scrape is the start of the job rather than the end of it.

Repainted as a whole ceiling

After the texture and the primer, the entire ceiling gets painted. Not the repaired area, not the half you can see from the door. A patch of fresh ceiling paint next to older ceiling paint reads as a different color and a different sheen under any light in the room, and it stays that way.

That is also why we would rather do a whole room, or a whole open plan area, than one ceiling that runs into another with no break. Ceilings that flow into each other with no wall between them are one surface, whatever the floor plan calls them.

The walls usually want doing at the same time. Not because we want the work, but because scraping and skimming a ceiling means cutting a fresh line at the top of every wall in the room, and a new white ceiling makes a tired wall look worse than it did last week.

Older ceilings, and what to check first

If your ceiling texture dates from before the early eighties, have it tested before anybody scrapes it. That is a lab test, it is quick, and it is worth doing rather than guessing. We will tell you plainly if we think a ceiling is old enough to be worth testing.

The other thing worth doing first is looking for water stains. A brown ring on a ceiling means water arrived from somewhere, and scraping the texture off does nothing about the source. Find where it came from, fix it, then take the ceiling down to bare.

Fixtures, fans and vents all come off before the work and go back after. It is easier to scrape and skim a clear ceiling than to cut around a fan, and a fan blade that has been masked rather than removed always ends up with texture on it.
